There must be something wrong with me, because I could not stop laughing at this. Y'all did know that "unfriend" is the word of the year, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary folks, right? I prefer "defriend" myself, but I may change my mind after this:

Okay, I fixed the link to go straight to the correct image, AND I figured out why it's so tickles my funny bone. It uses meiosis, a drastic understatement of the situation, for which I am always a sucker. Ah, the etymology of humor: it's what all the cool kids are doing. Then, when they're done with that, they go look at more funny vampire pictures.

Hey kids! It's been awhile, but there's all sorts of stuff to be excited about these days. Fandomwise, that is.

TRADING CLOTHES & RINGING PAVLOV’s BELL by
shadowkat67 is possibly the most awesome Spike meta ever. You must read it. It delves into the chip, the soul, and the trigger in a very eye-opening and convincing way. I always appreciated the way the writers on Buffy gave a nod to such things as A Clockwork Orange and The Manchurian Candidate, but this meta points out just how complete and organic those references were, among many other things. I can't even begin to understand how I missed all the amazing (and in retrospect, obvious) stuff about the trigger and Spike/William's entire existence, so you'll just have to see for yourselves. You won't regret it.
I was relieved that the frakin' PTA meeting went okay, and all set to hunker down in front of the Monty Python documentary with the houseguests. Then I got an email notification about the Fang Fetish Awards announcements! So many friends represented! And, then this:

I had no such expectations for that little story, but I'm thrilled to know that people who know these things think it's not terrible. I'm so excited! The award is cool enough, but being eligible to put something up on Just Rewards makes me feel all immortalized and stuff! Since I am a fan of the Spuffy, but so much more, that site just completely slays me! I think I will celebrate by buying a bunch more icons. Look out LJ!

There's this newish community that I discovered in the last few weeks, and I think it's got real potential. It's called The Matri-thon, and its tagline is:
They are finishing up their first set of ficathon prompts, and will go to monthly challenges starting on Nov. 1, with two "free" days each month. C'mon over! It'll be fun!
I've also been wanting to rec a little fic that keeps nudging me. It's season 6 Spuffy, it's NC-17, it's first person, and it's super short, but it packs a wallop like very few fics I've read. It's not fluffy or funny, unlike the stuff I usually rec. Plus, it's not even in the writer's first language, so it's extra infuriating that it can be so good. Hmph.
I'm talking about
larabeckinsale's Look at Me. If you haven't already, check it out.
The Pan-Fandom Women 40 And Over Community
You need not be over 40, or a woman, to participate. It's about characters that are over 40 and female. For me, being primarily interested in Joss!verse fic, this covers lots of prime territory: Joyce Summers, Maggie Walsh, and Adelle DeWitt, not to mention all the vampires, gods, demons, and keys that fit the bill. That said, if a person were to write Dawn, they'd probably want to emphasize the zillion-year-old key aspect rather than the teenaged girl aspect. They are finishing up their first set of ficathon prompts, and will go to monthly challenges starting on Nov. 1, with two "free" days each month. Anyway, my Spuffy story turned into something of an epic. For me, anyway. It's a sequel of sorts to my story from the last round, </span>
Also, spoiler free, I'd just like to say that Dollhouse is making me crazy with love! And Glee is turning out to be a sort of Ohio version of Absolutely Fabulous, where everybody is over the top horrible, but I cannot possibly not watch with lines like this (spoiler): "They're children. They need to be terrified." Plus: boffo musical production numbers. This week on uppers! Whoa!
A very good week.</span> Can't wait to catch up on all the LJ I missed, though.
Farewell, Podocarpus
The tree guys just carted away the 30-plus-foot-tall podocarpus tree from our lightwell. Whoever planted it, back when it was probably a wee 3-ft sapling, put it right next to the house, where its roots could push up under the foundation and also start working on the pipes. It was a beautiful, lush thing, adding so much peaceful green where we would otherwise be looking right into the neighbor's dining nook. Which now we are. I'm bummed. I loved that tree.
Also, I'm not making many comments these days, because my
seasonal_spuffy posting day looms, and I am nowhere near ready. I hope my offering doesn't get me drummed out of the corps.

So, you know how I was bellyaching about how
seasonal_sd was going to throw a spanner into my crazy fic-writing October? Well, dammit, it's gone! Deleted! Frack! It had cool stuff. Does anybody know how to get ahold of moderator
viennarain, whose LJ account is also deleted? I mean, surely someone would be willing to take over the comm. I would, if such a thing were possible, though I know nothing about running a comm on LJ. Can ownership be transferred? Is it too late, now that she's gone? It has to have happened just this week.

As previously mentioned, it was my birthday a couple of days ago, and I'm here to say that you guys sure know how to make a gal feel fêted! Greetings poured in from at least four continents! And, just look at all this stuff my talented f-list made for li'l ol' me! No, really, look at it; it's quality stuff:
a) Gorgeous new Spike & Dru wallpaper from
xlivvielockex!
b) Funny birthday cartoon from
riccadonna!
c) Amusing Doll!fic from
mere_ubu!
d) Amazing stories about my favorite vampire, including The Eve of a Good Day from
angeria, Untitled in Las Vegas by
kallysten, and 'snick by
urania_calliope! These puppies run the gamut, from high hilarity to some deep thinky thoughts. Check 'em out.
Speaking of Snick, it has come to my attention that everybody in the world might not have discovered Seraph, an astonishingly good story by my birthday buddy
snickfic. If you haven't tried it, you owe it to yourself.
Thanks everybody! I'm ready to face another year!

It's your birthday, too. Yeah!
Today it's my birthday! But, wait! That's not all! It's also the birthday of some pretty amazing writers and readers of the Spike oeuvre. Some of whom just happen to be on my f-list. *busts buttons to be in such august company* So, let's give up some warm birthday fist pumps for
abelina,
brunettepet, and
snickfic! Also:
kathylovesspike,
lauratd,
_sharvie_, and
spuffyduds! My goodness! Isn’t that such of lot of talent all born on one day? Why, yes. Yes, it is. Whatever could have been going on 36-42 weeks prior to this auspicious day? Would you believe, New Year’s Eve? I haven’t worked up the nerve to ask my folks if my suspicions are correct, but there sure seem to be a lot of us. And we all seem pretty ready to party. If you’re going to rain on my parade by telling me that the birthrate is evenly distributed throughout the year or something, don’t bother. I’m happy in my rose-colored autumnal birthday capsule.
The really cool thing is that Joss knew just what to get me this year! All those years of him whining that I'm so hard to shop for have really worn me down. I keep telling him not to bother with fancy jewelry or cars, 'cos that's just not me, you know? But this year, he got it right, finally, by giving me a new season of Dollhouse! Isn't he the sweetest thing!
In other, fic writing news, I signed up for
seasonal_spuffy, and my assigned day is less than 2 weeks away. I'm hoping the panic sets in soon enough that I can hammer out something decent, but time's a-wastin'. Plus, there's that Darla ficathon thing due at the end of October, and I just know that the
seasonal_sd mod will announce a new round any second now. Have I mentioned that I work best under pressure? At least, I hope I do. Anybody wanna be my baby beta?
Psst! If you want to give one of your writer/artist friends a birthday thrill, try leaving a comment for something they did awhile back. That warm fuzzy feeling just lasts and lasts.
Happy Friday, everybody!

First of all, y'all know it's the season premiere of Glee tonight, right? Fox. 9 PM or so. Check your local listings. You're going to want to record it. Trust me on this.
I went to see Julie & Julia (or is it the other way around?) this weekend, and voila: another check in the over-40 romance column. I'm telling you guys, it's like a fad or something. I'm not complaining. Stanley Tucci has really got something. Uh huh. It's like, I dunno, intelligence? Anyway, it's swell and all, but looking at all that Bavarian Cream made me feel a bit inadequate, culinarily speaking. I mean, I can knock out a mean bundt (ask anyone) and my Xmas cookies are verging on legendary (to those in the know), but I'm just never going to be Julia Child. Also, although I keep asking him not to, MiAmor occasionally buys boxes of Ding Dongs, and I am completely powerless to resist them. Uniform little hockey pucks of chocolate cake, with a very thin layer of something that might pass for chocolate ganache frosting, and a dollop of creme inside, wrapped in a shiny square of foil, like those Sucrets lozenges used to have. They are un-nature's perfect food. I don't think Julia would've looked twice at one. There's a little café down the street, Tartine, whose cooks know all the secrets of butter and pastry, and I have been struck dumb with wonder after a bite of something there. But still: Ding Dongs.
( Season 8 comic spoilers under the cut: )
Work has been plentiful lately. I'd like to think that means something, but it's hard to tell. All I know is that this Universal Healthcare dealio is going to mean a lot to my (healthy, self-employed) family. I'm on pins and needles wondering if Mr. President, Sir is going to pull it out tonight. C'mon, baby! Make me believe it! (And everybody else, too.)
Besos to all on this lovely Wednesday night!

Apparently, today is my day to spam all of you lovely people. I just saw this on Petzi's journal, and I wouldn't want anyone to miss it (like I did High Plains Invaders last Sunday - which it seems was only shown once *pout*):
Glee
8:58/7:58c Fox
Disney might own the High School Musical franchise, but Fox has...the glee club. Snicker at this nerdiness if you will, but creator Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) adds no small amount of edge as he introduces us to William McKinley High's ensemble. In this new director's cut of the pilot (which first aired in May), club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) even gets a jock to join his nerds. Of course, he must use subterfuge to do it. Glee is scheduled to begin its regular run next Wednesday. — Paul Droesch
DVR this puppy! If you missed it back in May, now is your chance! I happen to know that *ahem* Mr. Joss Whedon is a fan, and so should you all be!

Here's my belated Comic-Con 2009 report. It's long. It's rambling. The pictures are likely too big. Here goes, anyhow.
San Diego Comic-Con 2009 was, for me, Buffy Scribe Safari! There's other stuff, but you might as well know the theme, right from the start.
( But first, a digression about what the Con has become and my comics-reading history… )
( Wednesday, July 22 – or, shop ‘til you drop )
( Thursday, July 23 - the lost day, with bonus Terry Gilliam )
( Friday, July 24 - day one of the Buffy Scribe Safari )
( Saturday, July 25 - Buffy Scribe Safari, the Big Kahuna )
( And beyond... )

I'm back from Comic-Con and Writercon, and still processing everything. At both events I didn't get quite as much time with friends as I would have liked, but I'm so happy to have gone and to have met the people that I did. The workshops at Writercon were amazing, and I was blown away and inspired, but must get some sleep, now.

Well! Going to the "Glee" panel was a great choice. Joss got in line right behind us. Homhomhom. I ended up sitting behind him during the showing of the season premiere, somehow. He was vastly amused by the "arriving early" scene, as were we all. *happy sigh* The episode did not disappoint.
Having a wonderful time, needless to say, yet I feel moved to say it anyway.

Fellow Writercon attendees! I've got small issues. I'm taking the red-eye out and will arrive at the crack'o Friday morning. Since check-in is at 3PM, and I suspect I'll arrive at 7:30AM or so, I'm searching for a spot to freshen up before the festivities begin at 9:30AM. And possibly a post-lunch nap. Though that might turn into a pre-cocktail party nap, when I'll already have my room. It all depends on adrenaline and caffeine consumption, I suppose.

But it's summer! Last weekend, the drag queens were in bloom, the Dykes on Bikes were dressed in their summer clothes (or, you know, not), and all the visitors to Our Fair City were snapping photos of celebrity street signs. It was glorious. And, for once, the summer fog stayed away, so the usual gooseflesh surrounding Pride Weekend was at a minimum, which made me happy, although I'm not much for the heat myself. Still, I'm always glad to see the old broad put on a bright smile when company comes. Usually, I see people shivering in the mist, wearing shorts and flipflops in June/July, and I feel responsible. They made a reasonable assumption (Summer + California = warm, sunny days), and it feels mean to disappoint them. But last weekend was popping with color, feather boas, rainbow platform sandals, and the thumpa thumpa of the techno beat (or whatever the kids are calling it these days).
It's summer! The first road trip was to SoCal (cold! windy!) to visit an 8-year-old just out of the hospital (she had a bout of pneumonia, but she's much better now) and other friends and relations, and to see the recording of The Importance of Being Earnest radio play, starring Charles Busch as Lady Bracknell, and our own James Marsters as Earnest/Jack. First time in-person sighting! Woo and hoo!
