In which I have a small complaint

I know everybody likes to rag on LiveJournal, and rightly so, but I'm a little miffed at Dreamwidth right now. Apparently, if you don't have a paid account, you can't get notifications of a response to a comment you made in another person's journal. How is that okay? Doesn't that negate the whole point of people talking to each other? I bite my nail at you, Dreamwidth. I also apologize for not responding to people who thought they were having a conversation with me on DW.

This is on top of my discontent with the way they decide willy-nilly which icons you will be left with when your paid account expires. Essentially I'm unhappy with my FREE STUFF not being how I want it. Gosh. What's wrong with people?

In other news, as soon as I get out from under this mountain of work, I'm going to McDiva's art show, the Death of DOMA rally in the Castro, a Frameline (LGBT, etc) Film Festival film, and more partying in the street! Whatever shall I wear to the Pride Celebration?

I didn't know that about DW. And you're having conversations over there?

I'm missing stuff.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:12 pm (UTC)
Well, I haven't actually been having many conversations over there, probably because of this whole lack of notification thing. Pfft.
Jun. 26th, 2013 06:59 pm (UTC)
I hadn't realised that either ... although I am still a 99% LJ person. But it makes me notice that the few comments I do over there haven't been answered ... so now I know who to blame. Ta

I know! I thought it would be less cluttered over there, and it is, but I've got to believe that this is one reason it feels so arid over there. I do like the cross-posting capability, though.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:13 pm (UTC)
Really? Huh. When did they start that? Because I'm pretty sure I've received notifications for replies to comments I've made.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:16 pm (UTC)
I dunno. I know I've received notifications for comments in posts I've made, but I can't think of any from other people' posts for quite awhile. Today I finally went to check my settings and found that the option is now grayed out. Harrumph.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:20 pm (UTC)
Hmmm, that's weird. I don't even have that option. The only one about comments that's greyed out for me is "(when) I comment on any entry in someone else's journal*", and then I have "(when) Someone replies to any comment or community post I make*", which is checked and active as far as I can tell. Hang on...
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:25 pm (UTC)
Yes! That's what I get, too. I wonder if they decided that "communities" are somehow different from "journals" for this purpose.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:30 pm (UTC)
But the way I read that, you should still get alerts when someone commetns to "any comment" you make - it's your own comments to other people's journals you won't get an alert for.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:42 pm (UTC)
That makes sense. But why no notifications, DW?
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:44 pm (UTC)
Have you checked your spam folder? I know I've had the occasional problem of gmail deciding that notifications are spam...

damnit i cant spell todae

That would be too easy. (I did check, but no joy.) I'll try to figure this out...tomorrow.
Jun. 26th, 2013 09:07 pm (UTC)
You might want to open a support ticket - my anecdotal experience is that they're pretty good about dealing with those quickly. At the very least, you'd find out exactly what's going on.
Jun. 26th, 2013 09:44 pm (UTC)
I'm gonna do that!
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:35 pm (UTC)
I know next to nothing about Dreamwidth, but I am very pleased by the fate of DOMA and the court's decision on Prop 8. =D
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:40 pm (UTC)
Yup. I'll just focus on the positive! There's plenty of it, after all.
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:46 pm (UTC)
whoa- you're right! I'm not getting notices from DW at all. I had a bunch (I usually cross-post from there) of comments that I didn't know about!
Jun. 26th, 2013 07:52 pm (UTC)
I feel my power waning...

It doesn't seem right, but I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one?

Rainbow body paint?

Jun. 26th, 2013 08:31 pm (UTC)
And you tell me to behave?
Jun. 26th, 2013 09:01 pm (UTC)
Never claimed to be consistent ;-)
Jun. 27th, 2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
Just posted a picture of two new arrivals in the household of a friend of mine. Not even a day old yet :-)

Really hope you had a great time last night; so wish I could have been at something like that.

Jun. 26th, 2013 07:59 pm (UTC)
My family won't exactly be dancing in the streets over this, so I'm dancing over my Facebook page. Very jealous of you right now! Enjoy celebrating!

And yeah. Dreamwidth kept the strangest set of icons when my account expired.
Jun. 26th, 2013 08:35 pm (UTC)
I was moved to put up the image of Liberty & Justice smooching on Facebook. Certain relatives have been silent. *shrug* I'm just gonna accentuate the positive.
Jun. 26th, 2013 09:01 pm (UTC)

If you're interested.

Wear something fabulous, from us all.

(Two weeks till the Lords have their last debate on gay marriage here; which if it goes the way the second reading did, might actually see it made straightforwardly legal. Keeping everything crossed.)
Jun. 26th, 2013 08:36 pm (UTC)
Two weeks is a long time to keep your ankles crossed, say I. ;-)

Mmmh no clue. When I started there I did have a free account. When someone answers/answered a comment I made I got an email.
Haven't tried notifications. no wait... I'm tracking rahirah because she went to DW but continues to cross-post.
Just checked, they aren't in my inbox any longer, the boxes weren't checked in the settings.
Weird. I don't remember taking it out. The RSS DW Feed for LJ still works - I see both of her posts in my LJ.

So yes - no notifications because the boxes weren't ticked (both for the inbox and the email). Huh...
*edit* But I'm not sure if I took them out myself. Are your settings okay, boxed ticked?

Re: Question about icons - Do you mean @ LJ or DW?
I now only about LJ: They let you keep (use) the ones that you used most in your LJ.

I haven't let my LJ account expire, so I don't know what they do with all those extra icons. I won a massive icon package for LJ and they are cheaper than DW, so I've never taken the chance.
Jun. 27th, 2013 05:14 pm (UTC)
Found it - I looked this up before:
LJ says what happens to user pics.
*quote* Based on your new account type, LiveJournal selects your active userpics by choosing your default userpic, if any, and the userpics you used most in your journal entries over the last two months; this process is not affected by your userpic choices in comments or community entries.
They talk about Inactive Userpics there, too. I'm not sure that was the same some years ago - they pics get deleted after more than 6 month.

@ DW I only found The icon slots do not expire as long as your paid account is active. If you revert to a free account, the icon slots are disabled until your account becomes paid again.
It doesn't say how they decide.
So I really have no clue....

I don't have an account on DW. I can't remember what the big benefit was that made a lot of people switch, or maybe it was just all the problems with LJ. There are so many different "social media" sites now. I miss the days when it wasn't so scattered. It seems like a lot of work to post in so many different places. (Although one of these days I suppose I will get on Tumblr)

Wonderful news about the Supreme Court decisions today! It's never not a battle, but we keep moving forward.
Jun. 27th, 2013 07:24 am (UTC)
I didn't go over to DW as any kind of protest, it just gave me a place to back up my LJ journal and to crosspost with ease, something that became ever more valuable as LJ had more DDOS attacks and it seemed like we might lose stuff. I hate losing stuff. I hang on to a thing way past the end of its useful life. If you doubt me, know that I am looking directly at two defunct Palm Treo phones at this very moment. Anyway.

I don't have much problem letting go of discriminatory laws, though! Woo hoo! Was dancing in the street, although I wore the wrong shoes and now have blisters. Boo.
