Summertime smells like…

July! The month I’ve been dreaming of! I am in Oregon, land of my birth, and here I will be for 2 whole weeks! It’s like some kind of miracle, brought to me by the unemployment fairy! Also by MiAmor, who chipped in for a new, used laptop, so that I can “work” on the road. Heh. You know what that means, don’t you? I never have to be offline! Now that’s a vacation! Hmmmm. Mayhaps I’m missing something? Naw.

I actually was offline for most of yesterday, and when I checked in after midnight, the Rogue Poet Awards had announced the winners of Round 9, for which With This Ring was nominated in multiple categories. Thanks again to whomever nominated it! It must’ve been more than one of you guys, because the story was up for the Reader’s Choice Award, which (drumroll, please) it won! As if that weren’t enough, it also won a Judge’s Choice Award, and Best Short! I’m a bit overwhelmed. It feels like a fanfic Trifecta around here. These are the first judged awards that I’ve won, so it’s very sweet, though having popular support for the story makes it even more so. Don’t worry, I’m not going to go all Sally Field on you. But, omg, thanks! Here's the pretties, so you know I'm not making this up:

I am in great company, as many friends also came away with pretties! snickfic, moscow_watcher, deird1, lilachigh, gabrielleabelle, angearia, brutti_ma_buoni, enigmaticblue, penny_lane_42, clawofcat, and sotia were all recognized for their outstanding work, and let me just add my hearty congratulations! Of course, there were some really excellent pieces that ended out of the money (of the strictly digital graphics kind), so I'd recommend checking out the nominated stories, as well as the winners, if you haven’t already. These award sites are a great way to find good fic, which is the only reason I am here today. (“Here” meaning LJ, not Oregon.)

In other fandom news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead, and I am still going to WriterCon. I’m trying to decide what story to submit for the archive, but
I’m not sure I’m the best judge of my own work, so if any of you have an opinion I’d be grateful to hear it. I’m thinking of Let the Good Times Roll (the Spike/Dru Mardi Gras story), Do You Believe? or With This Ring (both Spuffy). Also, I was accepted into the Writer’s Salon, so I’m going to be spending my lazy July coming up with 2-4,000 words that haven’t been posted anywhere yet. Also, there’s another seasonal_sd round just announced for later this month, and I’d hate to miss it. There’s just 3 weeks before Comic-Con, so I guess that’s my deadline. Wish me luck!

I have a Dreamwidth invite code, so let me know if you are looking for one.

Next up: My Earnest Report (with photos).

I'm an oregonian too (well, by that I mean my folks moved there when I was in middle school) so enjoy your time in God's Country!

As to which story to submit, I admit to a weakness for the Spike/Dru. Though I liked all three!

Thanks! I missed middle school in Oregon, but I can't imagine it would be much better here than anywhere. *shudder* Overall, though, this is a magificent place, and with so many beloved friends and family here, it's a treat to visit.

Thank you for weighing in on story choice. I'm hopeless at these sorts of decisions.

Congrats on the wins. Lovely banners.

Thanks so much! I think they are beautiful, of course. Your good opinion means an awful lot, too, though.

Congratulations for the awards honey!!! :D

Thank you! It was a nice surprise. Maybe people like Buffy and Spike getting together in a story? Even in a PG way? Just a guess, mind you. Still, I might try it again, someday.

Yayayayay!!! I almost sent you a screamy jump-up-and-down message when they first posted the winners, but then I was like, "Be cool. She'll post about it and then you can be a spazz." ;)

Those are all great story choices for the archive. If poked with a stick, I would admit a particular fondness for Do You Believe? But then, your historical Spru is sooo much fun and, darn it, I'm just no help.

Enjoy your lovely Oregon! We went on an Oregon coast vacation two summers ago and still get all "remember when" every time the mercury climbs over a hundred.

Re: \0/
Heh. Thank you so very much. I was a little spazzy myself, as MiAmor will testify. "Stop poking me! It's one o'clock in the morning!" Heh.

Thanks for the story choice input. I'm really bad at these kinds of decisions.

Oregon! Hail to thee, land of heroes! See, I still remember part of the state song! I'm so happy you guys have been here! It has a special place in my heart. There is a family place on the Coast, Netarts, but I'm not sure we'll make it out this year. I'll miss the annual stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory, if we don't, though.

Re: \0/
Ooh, we went to the Tillamook factory! I bought too much cheese and ate too much ice cream and it was perfect. If you make it there, do too much of something for me, okay? *g*

Yay, congratulations! I was tickled pink to see "With This Ring" show up on the awards list so many times. :)

Enjoy Oregon! I spent some time growing up there, and still occasionally get nostalgic for the Willamette Valley and certain parts of the coast.

Thank you, Snick!

The Willamette Valley and the Coast are our usual stomping grounds, here. So amazingly pretty. This year, the bulk of the visit will be in Portland and the McKenzie River Valley. Stunning country. We might try to head to Mt. St. Helen's, though, which will be exciting.

A tribute to awesomeness!
Well done and well deserved.

Thank you, sweetie! I'm a little surprised by the good reception, but maybe that's what happens when you actually let Buffy and Spike get together in a story. Who knew?
Jul. 2nd, 2009 08:22 pm (UTC)
Yay you!
Jul. 5th, 2009 05:02 am (UTC)
Thanks, Barb! Sweet of you to say so!

Congratulations, Rebcake! What a wonderful thing to come home to! :D
Jul. 5th, 2009 05:04 am (UTC)
Thanks! I actually got the news on the first day away from home! It got the vacation off to a good start, though!
