Ficlet: Souvenir

Title: Souvenir
Rating: R (for bodily fluids)
Word Count: 290
Prompt: 069 - Band Candy (for the [info]still_grrr community)
Character: Joyce

Joyce started the dishwasher and wiped her hands as she surveyed the kitchen. Spic and span. She looked over the dining room, Everything was properly stowed. She peeked into the living room, and sighed at the rumpled afghan heaped on the couch and the lone water glass leaving a ring on the coffee table. She folded the blanket, put it away, and wiped up the ring, which, on further inspection, didn’t seem too bad. “That’s a blessing,” she thought.

It was Friday. Buffy had called out as she left the house, “Patrol, Bronze, mini-patrol. Don’t wait up!” Joyce poured herself a finger of the good scotch and rummaged around for the new Artweek before heading up the stairs. A bath might be nice.

She went into her closet: “Just to grab my robe,” as she always told herself on Friday nights. As always, the robe remained on its hook inside the door. There, behind the wool coats that were only worn during a couple of weeks in February, was another coat, even more impractical.

She had briefly considered returning it to the shop, really she had. Instead, she’d just added the cost to the anonymous money order she’d sent to cover the broken window. But really, returning it had always been out of the question. She couldn’t, not with the little tear under the arm, where she’d stretched herself too far over the hood of the police car. Not with the tiny dot of melted chocolate, just there. Or with the stains that were smeared across the back, inside, above the hem. Those wouldn’t come out, and there was no washing it anyway, not with those ridiculous feathers everywhere. Joyce shivered, and smiled happily. Friday nights were sort of fun.

I don't know if I've said this yet, but this is one of the very first Joyce stories I ever read, and is totally one of favorites.

Gawrsh! I'm so pleased, 'cos I never think that Joyce gets enough love! For more Joyce stories, go to matrithon and click on the "Joyce" tag. You won't regret it.

My simle just grew in that last paragraph. You did a fine job with the hum drum and keeping her voice, only to surprise us with her dirty side. Love it!

Heh. She's a sly one. Disturbing though it might be to the kiddies, every mom has her dirty side. Joyce's last scene in the show (when she's alive) is torturing Buffy by claiming that she can't remember where she left her bra on her date. Heh. I always liked her...

LOL! OMG, she kept the coat. Of course, she kept the coat. Love it.
Feb. 27th, 2010 02:19 am (UTC)
She had to keep the coat, even if she couldn't wear it in public. Ever. But alone in her room...
Feb. 27th, 2010 12:58 am (UTC)
Love it. Oh, Joyce, you naughty girl.

I believe she might also be behind that reamer in the utensil drawer...

just saw the link @ petzepellegrino's lj recs and, now that I'm on lj, thought I'd leave a little love here (I believe I left a comment elsewhere as well at the time, but well... I'm here now).

I think it's just lovely that Joyce got some pleasure from remembering that time with Giles. I like to think, completely in fantasy-land, of Buffy; or maybe even Dawnie, finding a diary entry; maybe an unfinished letter, and passing it on to Rupert, so that he knew he'd given their mum some happiness.

Thanks for writing this,

Still under Willow & Tara's spell,

Thanks for commenting again, Ray. So generous of you.

I do think it was odd that two mature adults couldn't have faced their indiscretion directly (and perhaps tried for a bit more). The great advantage of middle age is one isn't so embarrassed about anything and everything anymore.

The most convincing argument I've read was that Giles didn't feel right about getting involved with Joyce, because he was very likely to be responsible for her daughter's death, at some point. Still, I can't help but think that Joyce and Giles could've used the company of another adult through all the coming travails.

Well, it was a teen show at heart... and us middle-aged types having sex? A little icky, you know, 'cuz we're like... old, and stuff :-)

well worth commenting twice. It's just a shame I haven't had the time to hunt down some truly re-worthy fics; amongst which would have been this one.

Still under Willow & Tara's spell,

D'ya know? i was typing this, and I had the strongest image of a slightly tipsy Joyce 'confessing' to a 'really-want-to-be-elsewhere Tara :-) Now then, if you can do anything with that 'lil plot bunny, consider it a thank you gift.

There really should be more Joyce fic. I miss her!
Feb. 27th, 2010 05:51 pm (UTC)
Yes to more Joyce!fic! There are some good ones out there. I'll have to start a rec list at some point. I'm glad you liked this one.

Mom's need love too! Very nice.

Yes, they do. Naughty fun, even. Thanks for commenting!

Oh, how I miss Joyce!
And apparently, I missed this too...
Feb. 27th, 2010 08:42 pm (UTC)
I'm not surprised you missed it. This might be the 2nd fic I ever wrote. Even I had almost forgotten it.
Feb. 27th, 2010 10:12 pm (UTC)
Ah, Joyce's secret life! I love it :)
Feb. 28th, 2010 04:40 am (UTC)
I'm sure that there was lots to her we never saw. And a woman has needs, even if one of them is for feathery fripperies. That's what you meant, right? Heh.

Not unlike the lady herself, then? Heh. Thanks, sweetie!

I loved this. Agreed that Joyce should have had lots more 'fun' and she and Giles should have had more together.

And who wouldn't keep that coat *G*?

(I should really try to gather my recent but all-but-forgotten thoughts about a Joyce story and get it written. I vaguely remember that it was quite good; perhaps this will kick me into gear and get it done.)

Thanks for commenting, sweetie! I'd love to see your Joyce fic!

Ooh, love it! I can imagine Joyce being nostalgic on the sly.

How could she not be? That Giles is pretty memorable!
