My Top Twelve

My Favorite Vampires, gakked from girlpire by way of SFX's Top 50 List.

  1. Spike (surprise!)
  2. Dru
  3. Dracula (George Hamilton in Love at First Bite)
  4. Dracula (Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula)
  5. Harmony
  6. Pam (True Blood)
  7. Claudia (Kirsten Dunst in Interview with the Vampire)
  8. Darla
  9. Russell Edgington (True Blood)
  10. Jessica (True Blood)
  11. Count von Count (Sesame Street)
  12. Vampire!Willow
Honorable mentions: Marceline the Vampire Queen (Adventure Time) & Constantine (Vampire guy from Sunshine) — Hey, look! They rhyme!

I’m not really that excited about vampire stories, apparently. I don’t watch The Vampire Diaries, Moonlight, Blade, Underworld, or countless other popular places where vampires can be seen. I’m not that interested in the whole “Lonely Ones” woe-is-me story. I’m not thrilled with that aspect of many superhero stories, either. I like to see people enjoying whatever advantages life — or unlife — has brought them, even when it results in them being hoist on their own petards. Maybe especially then. Because we all know that even eternal (literally!) optimists hit a wall sometimes.

This isn’t deep, but I prefer vampires who don’t act like people thought they would. I’m sure there are lots of examples of this in the things I don’t watch or read. I want to be surprised, and my patience for getting to the unexpected is short. Seriously, the main reason Darla is on my list is that she flipped expectations in the first five minutes BtVS. Her run on Angel also helped to make her marvelous, but I wouldn’t have had the patience to get there if it weren’t for her ridiculous schoolgirl predator stint on Buffy.

All that said, I’m likely to go see Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, because Johnny Depp can pretty much be counted on to do something interesting with Barnabas.

Also, does anybody know how to find that vid of Spike set to the Count’s “I Love To Count” song? Funny, naughty stuff…
ETA: It's Cybermintz's award-winning "The Song of the Count", but I still don't know how to get to something I can watch and chortle over. :(

If I can't have Spike, I want Russell -- please!?!
Jan. 26th, 2012 01:24 am (UTC)
I very much doubt that we're his type. But his joie de un-vivre is captivating, isn't it?
Jan. 26th, 2012 08:22 am (UTC)
Oh yeah! I'd reeeeally try to win him over.

Russell Edgington is pretty fabulous.

He's just a whole heckuva lot of fun. Unless you're in his way...and we're always going to be in his way, alas.

Good choices! i would have added Mitchel from Being Human, but otherwise...

Also, the vid sounds like my kind of thing, so I'll have to hang out and hope someone know it...

Mitchell was pretty darned cute, but I never finished watching the first season due to lack of enthusiasm from the peanut gallery, so I don't feel qualified to comment on him.

That vid! It was so, so wonderful, and I didn't understand about vids getting yanked, so didn't take precautions. *weeps* Should I ask on seeking_spike do you think?

I love Being Human, but not everyone agrees. Mmm, Mitchel!

And worth trying seeking_spike. You never know! Good reminder about back up though.

I love Being Human, too, and Mitchell is one of my favorite vampires. <3

Eli from Let the Right One In would also be on my list.

I don't remember ever seeing Count von Count. Though I did watch some Sesame Street when I was a kid, but I remember almost nothing except that there's a big bird in there?

I originally had Eli on the list, but decided it would be cheating to put her on as I've only seen her once, while the others are old friends. ;-) I've got to get around to watching the US version, as I'm rooting for Hit Girl Chloe Grace Moretz.

I got reacquainted with Count von Count when my daughter was little. Sesame Street is a parent's friend — it's fun without being stupid and studded with interesting guest stars — which is why SMG says she'd be willing to revisit Buffy, but only on Sesame Street!

I've got that vid - the Count one - saved somewhere, I think. Will have a look tonight! :)

Boy howdy! I almost found it, but the site was very dodgy. *shivers* It would be lovely if you had it lying about!

It's on a disc... somewhere. I will try to find it over the weekend (because I am worried that I don't know where those discs are), so hold on for a little longer. But I DO have it!

I don't like vampire stories either, which is why I found Spike such a breath of fresh air.

And Russell. He's wonderful.
Jan. 26th, 2012 12:15 pm (UTC)
I don't hate vampire stories, but I don't automatically like 'em either. It's all in the execution, and if there's one thing Russel understands completely, it's executions! *rim shot*

I whole heartily agree with #1, #3 (I love that movie and GH was a hoot) and # 11 (3...3 favorite vampires wha, wha wha) Hee!

Man, the whole "Count Dracula comes to New York and he's just another tourist out of his depth" concept was beautiful. Unfortunately, the movie's best scene has been bowdlerized on the DVD. I guess they lost the song rights to "I Love the Nightlife" and without it the disco-dancing doesn't "pop" in the same way. Still...

I wrote a ficlet wherein Spike and Drac run into each other at this point, called The Out-of-Towner:

*loves the nightlife*
