I'm at the "Once More With Comics" Panel

AKA: The continuation of the Whedonverses in comics panel.

Tom Lenk asked if Andrew's sexuality has been addressed in the comics yet. Scott Allie said that they weren't sure how to approach it because they didn't want to introduce a new character just to be Andrew's boyfriend. Oh. Okay.

"I choose Spike," said Tom.

Uproarious approval from the audience. Because really? Who wouldn't?

Allie's answer bugs me. Tom Lenk is as a god. <3.

Heh. Well, perhaps a demi-god. Like Pan. Allie cannot help but be clueless, it seems. Last year, at the awesome "Gay Characters in Buffy" panel, he promised that we would be getting a new gay male character (but not just to be Andrew's boyfriend) and...where is he? My gaydar is as good an anybody's but I've got nothing. Allie's pants are on fire.

I love Tom so much. ♥

I met him several years ago at the one and only actor event I ever went to. He (and Danny Strong) were so very sweet to the fans.

He reminds me of my (step) son, like, a LOT. When I met Tom, I was having to hold myself back from setting them up. Such a nice boy. They'd probably be horrible for each other because they are too similar, but a mother can dream...

Well, it's not like they introduced a new character just to be Willow's girlfriend.

Oh wait.
Jul. 12th, 2012 04:46 pm (UTC)
My thought exactly.
Jul. 13th, 2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah. I could see Jane Espenson mentally rolling her eyes, even though she's too polite to actually do so.
Jul. 12th, 2012 04:35 pm (UTC)
Heh! Though, I hope they don't actually do it, because Andrew gets on my nerves (and on Spike's).

Do post more tidbits if you hear anything interesting.

Andrew gets on my nerves too (Especially in S9) but Tom is a sweetheart and, of course, I approve his choice! ;)

Well, Andrew amuses me (see above re: stepson) but even if he chooses Spike, Spike is very unlikely to choose him. And Spike should have some say at this point in his love life, IMO.

However, anybody who can pwn Allie has my vote!

Heh! Mine too. There's supposed to be a two-issue arc written by Jane E and Drew Greenberg coming up which features some OCs, and this new gay male character may be one of them. If so, though, I suspect he won't stick around after the arc, so Dark Horse can tick that box but not commit themselves too much.

Andrew's an annoying git, but his actor has good taste. *g*
Jul. 13th, 2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
I like 'em both, though Tom comes out on top. He and Jane Espenson are thick as thieves at these things, which is a good indicator of his worthiness. *nods* Not that he's worthy of Spike, but a boy can dream.

Hee! I'm pretty sure I saw invisible high-fives between Jane Espenson and Tom.
Jul. 12th, 2012 10:08 pm (UTC)
Wait, why would they need a character to have a love interest to broach the subject of that character's sexuality? Also, isn't Andrew being gay canon by this point? Or it just more fun to use potential homosexuality in a male as a joke?
Jul. 13th, 2012 01:04 am (UTC)
Good point.
Jul. 13th, 2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
Uh, no, it's not canon, or at least not explicitly so. That said, even Allie has no illusions on that front. He didn't say anything about a girlfriend from Canada, thank gawd.

Last year at another panel, he told us there would be a new gay male character in Season 9, but if he has appeared anywhere it's been on the downlow. The implication was that the new paragon would be less of a joke, but who knows?

I thought Andrew made a comment to Buffy in one comic about not being into women or agreeing with her that certain men were sexable (which wouldn't make him gay specifically, I suppose). Maybe I read that in a fanfic... or I imagined it... Oh, well.

All the points to Tom Lenk!
Jul. 13th, 2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
OMG! Andrew's GAY?!?!?!?

j/k :-)
Jul. 13th, 2012 07:45 pm (UTC)
I'm SHOCKED! Shocked I tell you!

Though, to be fair, nobody (even Allie) had the nerve to pretend otherwise.
Jul. 13th, 2012 02:40 pm (UTC)
Handled excellently! BTW, it would be impossible for me to love your icon more. Maybe if Eddie was poking Spike in the nipple?
Jul. 13th, 2012 07:50 pm (UTC)
All things are improved by shirtless Spike. The panel would have been improved by shirtless Spike.

Tom has excellent comic timing, which sort of makes Allie pale in comparison. Go Tom!
