I have yet another plan!

Unbeknownst to myself, I've been casting about for a new RL project. I've had vague notions of various trips I could take, and causes that I ought to throw myself into, but nothing was firming up because I had to have my gall bladder out first.

Well, that's done, and it went well, so I'm moving on. And what should come into my mailbox the other day? A save-the-date message for a friend's wedding. In October. In Rome.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! This wedding has been in the works for a few years now, and it is going to be spectacular. The last time I was in Rome was when I was pregnant with McDiva, and MiAmor has never been. For the next 9 months, I will throw myself into research, planning, Italian refresher courses, and watching dozens of Italian-travel-themed movies. That's MiAmor's research of choice. I watched The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone and Gidget Goes to Rome a few weeks ago, for no good reason. The Gidget one was waaaaay more fun, by the way.

I'm trying to figure out how long I can be gone. There's the wedding, then the whole party is apparently moving to Venice, which I have never visited. Dear Old Dad is also planning to go, and may take a side trip to Sicily, which sounds peachy to me. I'm eager for McDiva to expand her horizons a bit, so I'm hoping she can be convinced to take a longer trip, with or without her father and I. She speaks Spanish and Spain is right next door, for instance. But there's also France (Paris) and England is just a quick Aerostar jump away. The Chunnel was not open the last time I was in Paris, you see. Decisions, decisions!

I am disappointed that the timing most likely won't coincide with writerconuk, though.

So excited for you! I've been getting wanderlust for Europe lately myself :).

I am not what I would consider widely-traveled, but even for me it's been way too long! In a way, I feel like I shouldn't be covering the same ground when I go back, but Rome is definitely worth another look.

Other places on my list that I may or may not make it to this time: Budapest, Prague, Amsterdam. I like cities.

Yay! So exciting!

I am excited! I am really hoping I can work the UK into this outing. If not, then I'll just have to go "over there" again soon!

I hope so too!

Re: Is it a cunning plan?
It's an extremely cunning plan, imo. ;-)

The thing about travel, for me, is that the research/planning part is just as much fun as the going. That means the trip can last for months!

You would be more than welcome to stay here, and I bet we could set up some sort of get-together in London too.

I have been studying Italian for a few years now. Lovely language.

How kind of you! I am really quite desperate to work the UK into this trip. In theory, I could work from the road, which means a MUCH longer trip. But the theory has quite a few logistics to work out.

My Italian was never fabulous, and now it is rusty. Same with Spanish. French is what I studied the most, but have had so few chances to actually use it that I don't know what to expect!

I am DESPERATELY jealous.

Me too! I mean, I always thought of myself as having traveled a bit, by USA standards, anyway, but I haven't been outside North American in nearly 20 years! It's not like there isn't plenty to do here, but my inner self thinks I should be more worldly or something.

Perhaps it's Dear Old Dad, who in that same time has been to: New Zealand, The Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Morocco, Croatia, Iceland, Finland, Russia, Cuba, Uruguay, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iran, Israel/Palestine, and …. well, I'm sure I've forgotten something. He puts us all to shame. MiAmor is halfway convinced he's an operative of some sort.

Oh how fun! I mean the trip, not the gallbladder. But glad that went well! I'm jealous; I haven't been to Europe in ages, and what with school and all it's not looking all that likely for a couple of years. You'll have a ball!

It's been ages for me, too! I think the stars will align this time, though.

Yeah, the gallbladder was not the funnest. But man, the nurse who did my I.V. was a marvel. No bruising at all!

Whee! I'm as it happens in venice right at the start of october but it sounds like you'll be there later. If you *can* get to London, would be so awesome to see you!

As for Rome... sigh. So wonderful. I have reams of recommendations. Bit out of date by now though.

Yes, the wedding is set for mid-month, so it will probably be on the later side before we make it to Venice. There are still lots of things to work out, though. UK first, then Italy? Vice versa?

Recommendations always welcome. Mine are 20 years out of date. So. I'm glad I dragged my sister to Cinque Terre the last time I was there. I doubt we'll be able to squeeze it in this trip. *sigh*

Hey, if you, gillo, herself, and I all go to Italy this year, can we form a club?
